Hi everyone,
First off, just to let everyone know that ELRepo is planning to support
RHEL6 when released.
To start that process we have started to take a look at the RHEL6 beta
and what, if any, changes we face. The guys at Red Hat have made a few
updates to kmodtool, and there are no more kernel variants to worry
about (xen kernels are gone, and the default 32-bit kernel is now PAE by
default) so overall things for us seem a little more straight forward if
anything - always a pleasant surprise :-)
For those who are testing RHEL6 beta and would like to also test some
elrepo kmod packages, there is a repo release file here:
http://elrepo.org/elrepo-release-0.1-1.el6.elrepo.noarch.rpm
and packages will be signed with the same key:
rpm --import http://elrepo.org/RPM-GPG-KEY-elrepo.org
There is an el6 tree in place and packages will remain in the /testing
branch until final RHEL6 release:
http://elrepo.org/linux/testing/el6/
Currently, we have just the one package available (kmod-hellop), which
is a hello world test kernel module that is hardware independent so
everyone can test it. Install, load the module (modprobe hellop) and
have a look in dmesg for the results.
Please also consider kmod-hellop as a way of providing example templates
for SPEC files and kmodtool for anyone wanting to contribute el6
packages - just grab yourself the latest copy of the src.rpm.
So which packages should we port first? If you have a particular need
for a package, or are able to test a package, please give a shout here
and we can direct efforts in the appropriate directions. I've already
started work on kmod-nvidia but that's proving a bit of a battle atm. We
are also considering porting various NIC drivers quite quickly, possibly
the Realtek and Intel drivers.
Finally, we'd just like to thank the guys at Red Hat again for providing
us with an excellent stable framework in which to provide updated
drivers. Thanks!
Phil
