It is apparent that you know what you are doing. Just make sure
elrepo-testing is not enabled (or not given a high priority).

An earlier version of module-init-tools had a bug that was causing a
problem with EL5.5. We provided a patched version of this package as
an interim solution. So, it is perfectly fine to install our
module-init-tools. However, an updated version of module-init-tools
that fixes the original problem has been released (thanks to Jon
Masters of Red Hat). Because it has a newer EVR (
3.3-0.pre3.1.60.el5_5.1 ) than rlrepo's ( 3.3-0.pre3.1.60.el5.elrepo
), yum is supposed to find the distro version. Can you try again after
'yum clean all' ?
