Subject: problem when loading new kmod-fglrx
Hello,
I am not sure if this is the correct email address for problems but if not
please redirect.
I am running CENTOS 5 64 bit version 2.6.18-238-5-1 which yum updated to a day
or two ago.
I have a previous version of kmod-fglrx installed and it worked great. I tried
to update to the new release and did the following steps:
1. Ran the uninstall script as detailed on the page
http://elrepo.org/tiki/kmod-fglrx
2. Rebooted the PC as requested by the script.
3. When the PC rebooted it could not start X11 as the driver was gone so I
tried to use the default driver but that did not work either.
4. On the command line I installed kmod-fglrx which loaded both the 32 and 64
bit drivers as I have a 64 bit system.
When I rebooted the screen just goes blank after the screen wherethe linus
version. It does not show the screens where the programs are loaded etc and the
PC is just hanging there.
What can I do to get this working ? I don't seem to be able to get out of the
blank screen to a command line to run the config-display ??
Thanks
---------------
Update to the above:
I went to runlevel 3 and did the following:
1 . ran this command
system-config-display --set-resolution 1024x768 --set-depth 24 --set-driver vesa
--set-videoram 0
and X11 worked again but the driver is on vesa so I tried to install the fglrx
update again and the
system says that it is up to date.
2. I went to system config display and selected fglrx - vendor-supplied driver
for fglrx as I believe
that that is the driver ?? The screen just stayed blank again when I logeed off
and back on.
3. I did 1 above again and removed fglrx to see if the fglrx driver disappeared
from the list,
which it did.
4. installed fglrx again and rebooted to get back to the normal boot and left
the video at vesa
4. When the system came back it was fine in vesa mode
5. I changed the driver to the fglrx that was back on the list and logged out.
6. When I logged back in the x11 was working and the software I was using
(BOINC) could see
the video card again.
So I have solved the problem and this can be set to resolved or just deleted.
Thanks
Giles
