the preferred method is to use a driver disk.  
http://dup.et.redhat.com/ddiskit/ is the official tool to create such 
disks. at http://www.kerneldrivers.org/RHEL5 you can find some 
instructions.  with a bit of tweaking you can use the kmods supplied by 
elrepo
