[elrepo] ath9k firmware not working on kernel 2.6.32-279.1.1

I upgraded to 2.6.32-279.1.1 and my wireless quit working. Here's the gist
of the problem:

(1) I'm using a USB wifi adapter identified via lsusb as "Atheros
Communications, Inc. AR9271 802.11n"
(2) I have compat-wireless and the relevant firmware installed via elrepo.
(kmod-compat-wireless-3.3-2.n.el6.elrepo and
ath9k_htc-firmware-1.3-1.el6.elrepo)
(3) Wireless is working under kernel 2.6.32-220.23.1.el6.x86_64
(4) When I am running 2.6.32-279.1.1.el6.x86_64 and type "modprobe ath9k" I
get a message that basically says "invalid module format". (I forgot to
save the output - I can upload it at a later time if needed).
(5) I can't use the ML kernel because it causes problems with video output
to my secondary monitor.

This problem seems to be the same as the one posted here:
http://elrepo.org/bugs/view.php?id=285

Has any progress been made to resolve this issue?
I'm a fairly new linux user. Is there anything inherently dangerous (from a
security and stability standpoint) in using the older kernel until this bug
is fixed?
