This problem had existed for years - new drivers are installed, Xorg loads them
then barfs on version mismatch against the old nvidia.ko kernel module that
nobody bothered to unload.

I looked at fixing this myself, but all the complicated Xorg started scripts do not
provide any hooks at all that run before Xorg is started. After Xorg is started,
it crashes right away so none of the post-Xorg scripts will not run. So there is no
place to put the crucial "rmmod nvidia.ko" command. So I failed.

elrepo X11 people probably know more about the Xorg startup scripts, but in all these years they have not fixed this problem.
