reboot should not be needed if you manually rmmod-ed the nvidia module. 
OTOH saving the xorg config prior to removing the old package might be a 
good idea, given that the erase process renames the config and the 
install scripts try to create a new one. In my case ( using yum shell 
and doing erase and install in a single transaction ) I was left with no 
config at all :)
