1) My first suggestion would be to create an EL7 virtual machine and
work out any build/installation issues there. Easy to say, slightly
harder to do (lots of reading). KVM is available natively in EL7.

2) I would suggest having an EL linux "expert" do a hands-on examination
of the system. It can be hard to diagnose a remote "black box" problem,
whereas, in person, seemingly unrelated issues can point to the bigger
problem and greatly speed up diagnosis.

3) Hardware is "cheap". :-) We all reach a point where a hardware
upgrade is in order.
