I did some searching, but found no solution.
There was a suggestion to enable (or disable?) 'semaphores'. Some
people reported it helped to reduce the problem, but did not fix it
completely. On the other hand, some people reported complete system
lock-ups when using this workaround, which is not good for me at all.

There were multiple kernel patches suggested, non of which seem to
solve the problem.

In fact, the more I search on the topic, the more complicated it gets.
It looks like even newer kernels with latest drivers are also affected:

Latest Intel driver refused to compile 'out of the box' on my CentOS.
But I didn't have time to look into it, so maybe it's something
obvious that can easily be fixed.

On the other hand, looking at the similar 'GPU hangs' other people
get, I doubt the latest driver will fix this issue...
