Ah. a stupid newbie error. And I'm no newbie, which makes it doubly
embarrassing... :(

I had an exclude statement in /etc/yum.conf for kmod-nvidia and nvidia-x11.

Funny how fixing one's broken configuration can such a huge difference! :)
