I've now tested on RHEL 5, 6 and 7 with both GNOME and KDE (Plasma),
with glxgears and have seen no issues.
From my understanding, nvidia first enabled GLNVD in the 361 beta
release and there were some reported compatibility issues, mostly with
games I believe. In the 361.28 driver release they then incorporated a
legacy libGL library and made that the default.
The 364 driver release then reverted to making GLNVD the default again,
hopefully after fixing some of the issues and the 367 beta release
brought in some ABI changes.
So hopefully the current 367 release should be more stable no most of
the issues have been resolved, so the next major long lived release from
nvidia may be a sensible time for elrepo to roll out GLNVD enabled
packages by default.
In fairness to nvidia, a lot of the incompatibilities with some games
was due to hooking in to unsupported non-standard features of the old
driver which are no longer available in the GLNVD enabled driver ABI, so
these are issues that need to be resolved by the games vendors. If this
is limited largely to games then it is not something that need overly
concern us an Enterprise Linux users, but I would like to receive as
many reports as possible from Enterprise users using a wide variety of
applications.
So at the moment I see no reason not to consider rolling out GLNVD
enabled packages.
